Ten Super Sounds in Life
We can’t escape sound. It’s all around us. It’s part of life on the planet we share with 6 billion others
With that many people, sound has become noise. Pure noise. The hubbub of the masses as they move, chat and entertain themselves.
The din of traffic. The roar of planes. Mobile phones ringing and beeping messages. Music blaring. People shouting above the crowd to be heard. Vehicles and voices. Gadgets and gaggling. All lost in an endless round of racket.
Yet sound is a healing balm. In it’s purest form it calms us. Pleases and pleasures us. Takes us places. Inside ourself and our dreams. Forgetting the world we live in yet also making that world seem OK for a while. Like inner music for the senses.
Despite the incessant commotion blaring out from the speakers of 21st century life, happily there are still some beautiful sounds alive and well below the hullabaloo. Ones that get forgotten. Missed. Or too subtle to make a mark that they go unnoticed. Till you are reminded of them. And then they flood in once more. Wonderful, super sounds.
Like these -
1. Baby Laughing - The sound of innocence. Loving life, being happy. With a face that lights up with absolute joy. The whole world loves a baby laughing.
2. Crackling Fire - A hypnotic sound. A speechless feel. As we gaze into the flames all reflective
3. Birds Singing - Nature’s theme tune sung by nature’s band. When birds chirp away all is well with the world. They proudly tell us so
4. Waterfall - Mesmerising, the water. Sleepy and inspiring and a gorgeous sight. A sound you can always imagine and never forget
5. Your name being called - The sound of our name on another’s lips is heaven. A voice calling us somehow uplifts us and makes us feel needed and recognised
6. Tee-dums - An old classic that’s become rarer. A person happy with life merrily on their way. Maybe a whistle to accompany as they hum, “tee-dum, tee-dum, tee-da” with a spring in their step and grin on their face
7. Being told, “I Love You” - Nothing touches us more. The energy, the love in those words. Talks to us somewhere deep and we want to dance, sing, play and come alive
8. Waves lapping the shore - Gentle lapping waves are organic stress relievers. A sound like no other. Kind. Soft. Friendly even. Usually accompanied by a gorgeous scene or backdrop. You can hear them now can’t you?
9. Laughter - Medicine, pure and simple. A rush of endorphins about the body. Our whole system gets a holiday. We feel good. Elated and upbeat. Laughter lifts our spirits
10. Aaaahhh - That sound you emit when you let go. On holiday on the beach as the stress departs. After a delicious meal you looked forwards to. When relaxation is official
Some sounds are super. Never can they be classed noise. They are simple and serene. Soothing and uplifting at the same time. They don’t invade the senses they massage them. And each one awakens the ultimate sound in us all. The one that heals the mind, body and spirit. Nature’s No.1.

This post was like a little vacation for me as I stopped to experience the sounds in my mind. But yes, the sound of silence is the best of all because everything that matters seems to reside there.
Jean, how true, we all forget these sounds and need a ‘vacation’ from the contemporary babble. Thing is once you start listening for these sounds you start hearing them more prominently plus lots of new ones. If you do hear any to add then please do so. I loved to hear them!
Chania, you have a new one but, naughty, naughty, you didn’t tell! Feel free to improve the post by inserting any I forgot, which was…….???
In the meantime I’m off to my well of inspiration where the water is as fresh as the day the Earth was born…..or, more precisely to have a cup of tea and a biccie and to reflect on all I feel about life. So no great secret to the posts, just my own view of this gift called life so long as it’s a simple view. You comments do uplift me and the encouragement so very welcomed. My genuine thanks.
With smiles unlimited to you both xxx
John, you have just got to stop! Every time I land over here, the new post is better than last! What kind of water are you drinking?!
Loved this post (of course). It massaged my ears just reading it (if that’s possible in this mixed metaphor). One sound that’s not on here, though …. ?
Hope all is well for you today.
Hi John,
Followed you here from Less Ordinary Living.
Love your list of welcoming sounds. I love the birds singing too! My yard is filled with happy birds. Just the other day I thought, “how happy the birds always seem.”
We need some silent “rooms,” where you just go in there and listen to yourself for a change.
Much thanks!
Giulietta, always musing
Birds singing, waterfalls, ocean waves…. you have just made my ears very happy. Ahhhh
hi john,
how are you?
i would have to agree with chania on this lol!!!
the sound of waves and baby laughing do it for me. no matter how stressful the day has been; lifting up my 9th month old daughter in the air and watching her smile, giggle and drool all over just creates a good feeling.
thanks for sharing this.
enjoy the rest of the day
Hey John,
I have to admit. I’ve always hated sound. I’m a very lite sleeper, one small sound and I’m kicking butt n’ taking names. I also have the worst concentration, if I hear anything other than the sound of my keyboard typing, I’m bustin’ down doors with my pistol *peo pow peo*
Alright, that’s what I would have told you two years ago… I essentially figured that having a mentality such as that, was going to make it very hard for my future girlfriend and family to live with me(which she does now).
Anyway, good post! I now enjoy about half of the things on that list
Be safe,
–Parker
Parker, sounds like a new sound diet needed. That and a little bit of love that might be music to your ears. Good luck to you both.
Ayo, not only is a child a delight to hear but also to see and be with. May you enjoy your daughter who now always has your heart forever.
Aileen, even reading your words when you describe these wonderful things is relaxing in itself. May all of your body, not just your ears, smile all over!
Giulietta, really great to re-meet on here. Silent rooms is a sensible idea. Imagine being able to go into a shop on the high street and experience a room of serenity. A personal one you can use for half an hour in silence or selected music or nature sounds? Wow, that sounds amazing doesn’t it? When will it happen I wonder????
